| | The foundation Sviatoslav Sviatoslav is a foundation of young people who are devoted to help underprivileged and sick children in Saint Petersburg. The foundation has set up several projects for the purpose of giving the orphans and sick children extra love and attention; the loving care they often have to do without. Some examples of these projects are: an orphanage; a hospital for handicapped children; a children's hospital for cancer and working with homeless children. The foundation employs Russian people who support the children on the spot and who take them out to do nice things. Sviatoslav acts on Christian principles. | The origin It's in the summer of 2001 when Tjitze Walinga, then leader of a youth trip, first comes into contact with sick children and orphans in a hospital in Saint Petersburg. They live in poor circumstances, in barred beds the children have a sad look upon their faces. They get the most essential medical care, but for the rest they are left to their fate. The penetrating smell, the heat and the crying children affect Walinga deeply. | | | The name When returning home he's not able to forget about the children and he thinks something should be done. Together with a group of young people up to the age of 25 he founded Sviatoslav. The foundation is named after a Russian friend, whom they have met during one of their trips. Sviatoslav means ?light and praise'. That's what marks the goal of the foundation: to enlighten the children's dark lives. | Russian employees In 2001 the foundation started from nothing, but the youngsters began to organise campaigns and raised money. Nowadays Sviatoslav has a growing number of donors. With the money raised they were able to appoint a number of Russian employees. They devotedly give the children in the hospitals and in the orphanages the much needed love and attention, because the government authorities don't provide enough staff. | |
